Lothian Dry Stone Walling

Lothian Dry Stone Walling

High quality dry stone repair, rebuild and new build across Edinburgh, the Lothians and the Scottish Borders

Our Craft

Dry stone walling, or drystane dyking, is a traditional skilled craft. It involves the careful placement of stones, without using mortar, to create sturdy structures such as boundary walls, benches, raised beds or planters. When built well, dry stone structures can be both functional and beautiful and can last hundreds of years.

Dry stone walls are found across the UK and each area has its own style. Without the use of mortar or cement, dry stone walls harmonise perfectly with their natural environment, providing an important habitat for small animals, insects and plants.

At Lothian Dry Stone Walling we are proud to practise this ancient craft and ensure it lives on for future generations in Edinburgh, the Lothians and the Scottish Borders.

Our Team

We are Stevie Gordon and Rosie Eatwell. We are experienced dry stone wallers who are passionate about our craft. This passion is reflected in the expertise, knowledge and hard graft we bring to every project. We are proud of our reputation for high quality builds and client satisfaction.

We are both DSWA Certified Level 2 wallers. Stevie has several years of experience working for Dry Stone Walling Perthshire, and walling in Edinburgh, the Lothians and Orkney. In 2023, he was one of a team of four who received the prestigious Pinnacle Award from the DSWA for the Doocot at the Teasses Estate in Fife. Rosie has worked on projects across the South East and West of Scotland, and has also worked for Dry Stone Walling Perthshire. She is currently the only woman in Scotland on the DSWA’s professional register.

In December 2023 we were very proud that one of our walls was selected by fellow professional wallers across the UK to win the DSWA Ellwood Branch‘s prestigious ‘Wall of the Year’.

Our Projects

Our work is bespoke to each client’s needs. We carry out small repairs to existing walls, rebuild damaged sections of wall and create new builds from scratch. We can re-use existing stone if a client has it or can arrange an order of new stone. We have experience using mortar, including lime mortar, where the client requests it.
